SUVs have undergone a dramatic change in fortunes over the past few years. No longer solely the preserve of premium brands like Range Rover, they’ve now become the ‘everyman’ vehicle of choice, especially if you live in a region where the terrain can be challenging at times. Toyota have been particularly responsive to this market shift, and the Fortuner is their latest foray into the on-off road market, with a rugged vehicle that looks just as good at home sitting on your drive as it does out on the dunes.
The Fortuner is a rough, tough, and aggressive looking car, but underneath that bold and dominant-looking styling purrs a real tiger of an engine, delivering smooth, balanced power to all four wheels. Those wheels come with either 17 or 18” alloys, giving it a confident road presence that, for an SUV, turns heads.
Internal diameters
You can comfortably seat up to seven people in the spacious cabin, and without worrying about cramped legroom or low headroom, either. The seats don’t compromise style for comfort, so you and your passengers can sit back and relax. Toyota hasn’t skimped on the internal build quality, either, so expect stitched tan leather and wood-trimmed touches that elevate this rugged SUV on the inside to something more akin to a luxury saloon. After all, just because you can go off-road whenever you want, doesn’t mean that you have to lack sophistication.
Punchy performance
You have a choice of two engines with the Fortuner, a 2.7-litre four-cylinder or a snarling beast of a 4.0-litre V6. If you’re planning to punish the local scenery with some off-roading then both will cope admirably, thanks to the six-speed automatic gearbox with a 4×4 drive.
Plenty of tech onboard
To make the driver experience even better, Toyota has packed the Fortuner with gadgets, including the Optitron Speedometer with a 4.2” colour display that’s intuitive and easy to operate. On some models, you can go for a key-start or a push-button start, and to make you feel really sporty, paddle shifts to ease you smoothly through that six-speed automatic transmission.
Safe for everyone
If you’re putting your whole family into one car, you want to know that they’re going to be safe. With a high ENCAP safety rating and both knee airbags and dual front airbags, you know you’re going to be protected. The engine management system includes additional safety features such as Electronic Brake Force Distribution to prevent skidding, and Auto Disconnect Differential.
A great all-rounder for on and off-road adventures
The Toyota Fortuner is designed to be good at both on and off-road driving, with plenty of control placed back in the hands of the driver. This isn’t a car that makes decisions for you – instead you decide how you want to drive it, and it responds like a well-trained (if slightly spirited) horse. The Toyota Fortuner does everything you ask of it, and in complete comfort, too. It’s no wonder that at Hertz Car Rental, it’s proving to be one of our more popular SUVs with customers.
