The Toyota Corolla has been a stalwart of the Toyota fleet for decades, and the latest model is better than ever. The 2020 Corolla is a whole new animal, with both petrol-only and Hybrid options to choose from. Power when you need it, where you need it
Everything has been tweaked, and this is a ground-up redevelopment, from the steering to the engine, the internal cabin detailing to the suspension and transmission. At the heart of this new design is the 2.0 Dynamic Force Petrol Engine, which is refined, responsive, and packed to the rafters with torque. You can choose from two hybrid engines too – the frisky little 121bhp 1.8-litre or the downright mischievous 178bhp 2.0-litre model, although at Hertz Car Rental you’ll currently be offered the larger 2.0-litre version.
The Hybrid technology is typically Toyota, namely cutting edge and very driver-friendly, particularly useful if you’re using this modern-day hot hatch/sedan crossbreed around the city on the daily commute, or for zipping along the highways on a road trip.
Rigid handling for a sportier feel
Just because it’s a larger, sleeker model doesn’t mean the handling is going to be ‘statesmanlike’. This is a car that loves to play, and the stiffened suspension and lower centre of gravity mean the Corolla goes around corners as if it’s on rails. The handling is agile and incredibly responsive, needing just a twitch of the steering wheel to get it through the twisty mountain roads.
Safety on tap
The Corolla has benefited from a complete redesign, and that includes adding in a host of active safety features throughout. Both passengers and driver are given complete peace of mind thanks to dual front and side airbags, and you’ll also have as standard:
- ABS braking
- Any-theft and immobiliser protection
- Electronic brake-force distribution for better traction
- Vehicle stability control
- Tyre pressure warning system
- Rear parking sensors
- Child restraint system
With halogen headlights and additional rear fog lamps for treacherous conditions, you’ll see and be seen clearly by other drivers too.
Sleeker, smoother styling
The old Corolla may have been a popular car, but let’s be honest, it wasn’t really a good looking vehicle. The new Corolla, however, has had a complete revamp both inside and out, and the result is a sleek, smooth exterior and a spacious, subtle interior that doesn’t look cluttered or over-fussy. Calm upholstery colours that contrast perfectly create a refined ambience, making the Corolla particularly popular with fleet managers. This is a stylish, business-like car with an understated road presence that belies that powerful 2.0-litre engine and sporty heritage.
